About Uruguay

The Eastern Republic of Uruguay is located in South America, between 30 and 35 degrees of latitude South and 53 and 58 degrees of longitude West. Uruguay is located in the temperate area of the Southern Hemisphere and tourism is one of its main industries. Uruguay limits in the North and the Northeast with the Federative Republic of Brazil, in the South and West with the Argentine Republic, in the South with the River Plate and in the East with the Atlantic Ocean. It enjoys a privileged location in the Southern Cone of the American continent.

The landscape features mostly rolling plains and low hill ranges with a fertile coastal lowland, most of it grasslands, and an abundance of rivers, streams and lakes.

The climate in Uruguay is temperate; the average annual temperature ranges from 16 to 20 degrees centigrade (61 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit).

Uruguay has a total area of 176,215 sq km. It is administratively divided into 19 departments and has a population of 3,250,000, mostly of European origin, especially Italian and Spanish descendents. The official language is Spanish.

The name "Uruguay" comes from Guaraní, the original language of the native people of the region, and means "river of birds". There are more than 400 bird species in Uruguay. The Eastern Marshlands are the half-way stop for birds migrating from the Antarctic to Canada.

Among the 72 species of native fauna, the country deer, the guazubirá, the capybara and the armadillo stand out especially.

There are approximately 2,000 different species of native flora. There are five kinds of natural bushes, which cover over 700,000 hectares. Moreover, Uruguay has the most extensive ombu forest in the world as well as many exotic species which have adapted to the Uruguayan soil.

Uruguay has 650 km of coastline on the River Plate and the Atlantic Ocean. The vast, white and golden sand beaches are one of Uruguay’s greatest tourist attractions.

There are seaside resorts for every taste: Punta del Este is the most internationally renowned, but there are many others as well, smaller yet equally beautiful.

More than 40 % of the population of Uruguay lives in Montevideo, its capital, a natural harbour and a pleasant city on the River Plate, with modern architecture and efficient services.

Due to the fact that Uruguay's economy is based upon cattle raising and agriculture, one of the best ways to know the country is to visit its tourist farms (called estancias). These estancias, while offering the services and comfort of five-star hotels, alsoprovide the unique opportunity of enjoying a rustic lifestyle and the peaceful and quiet atmosphere of the countryside.

Uruguayans live a peaceful life close to nature: they enjoy fresh air, sports, human relations and good barbecues.

The Uruguayan people are well-mannered, friendly and helpful, and are delighted to receive tourists from all over the world.
